A man has expressed concern over the rising cost of Okpa, a popular Nigerian food, after reportedly buying one for ₦500.
In a viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the man lamented that Okpa, which he described as “the last hope of the common man”, was no longer affordable to many Nigerians.
“My God, Okpa, it’s now ₦500. Nobody’s saying anything, no protest,” he said, displaying the food item.
He recalled a time when Okpa was sold for as little as ₦50, expressing concern about how low-income earners would cope with the rising cost of food.
Concern over low-income earners
The man questioned how workers such as bricklayers, primary school teachers and other low-income earners would survive amid the increasing cost of basic food items.
He also urged the government to intervene before the situation becomes worse.
“How will …… survive? How? If I don’t lend my voice to this, they’ll say those that stay in Maitama don’t care,” he said.
He ended his appeal by calling on the government to take action over the rising cost of food.
Nigerians react
The video has sparked reactions from social media users, with some arguing that ₦500 for Okpa may still be relatively low in some parts of the country.
SylvesterIfe wrote: “Okpa isn’t common o in this country condition, Wetin make Okpa common? I’m very sure big restaurants in Lagos will sell it 2k 😂 if they can make it.”
Another user, Son Of Man, said the price shown in the video was high compared with what he had seen elsewhere.
“Come see how it looks in Benin, my God!!! You will cry for Okpa,” he wrote.
Samurai, however, offered a brief reaction, writing: “Everybody de talk the one wey de pain am.”
