A Tunisian businesswoman living in Nigeria has revealed that she was forced to shut down her business after her landlord allegedly increased her rent by 380%.

In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the businesswoman explained that she had invested a significant amount of money into the building after renting it, spending years working to raise the money.

She revealed that she transformed the property, including changing the flooring and ceiling, but claimed that her landlord did not give her prior notice before increasing the rent.

In her words, she said:

“I had to shut down my door because my landlord increased my rent by 380% a few months ago. I invested all the money I had, worked for like five years to rent this building. I changed everything, from the floor to the ceiling.”

According to her, the issue became apparent when the time came to renew the rent, as the landlord allegedly demanded a new amount running into millions of naira.

She expressed frustration over the situation and warned business owners against investing heavily in rented properties without considering the possibility of changes in tenancy costs.

“She didn’t give me any notice. On the month I was to pay my rent, she said, ‘You have to pay so, so amount.’ We are talking about millions. Many millions. My advice to anyone: don’t invest on that building that you don’t own,” she added.

The Tunisian businesswoman also accused some landlords of mistreating and taking advantage of tenants, urging others to be cautious before committing significant funds to rented properties.
