President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated four national commissioners and two resident electoral commissioners (RECs) to fill vacancies at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), with their appointments subject to confirmation by the Senate.
Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, announced the nominations in a statement on Friday.
Among the nominees is Dr Bala Bila, the national commissioner representing the North-East, who has been reappointed.
For the North-West, Tinubu nominated Professor Mustapha Aliu to replace Professor Abdullahi Zuru, while Bashir Muhammed Umar was nominated to replace Professor Muhammad Adamu as the North-Central representative.
The President also nominated Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, the resident electoral commissioner in Osun State, as the national commissioner representing the South-West.
Babalola is expected to succeed Professor Cornelius Ajayi, whose tenure expires on October 24.
For the resident electoral commissioner positions, Tinubu nominated retired permanent secretary Dr Samuel Akinjide Akinleye to represent Ekiti State and Zahradden Basiru Sanusi from Jigawa State to replace Professor Saidu Ahmed Babura.
According to the Presidency, the nominations have been forwarded for Senate confirmation.
Tinubu urged the Senate to expedite the confirmation process ahead of the forthcoming general elections scheduled for January next year.
The appointments are expected to fill vacant positions within the electoral body as preparations for the elections gather momentum.
